Hello,
I want to install Vista Beta 2. I started the setup while I was running xp. I chosse NOT to to upgrade my current OS (c:), I choose to install on a seperate partition (e:). During installation (after copying files), I was prompt to reboot. So I reboot and the new Bootmanager is shown. I can select XP or Vista. When I chosse Vista, no bootscreen is shown. Instead of a Bootscreen my screen is complettly black. After 1 second my screen fade to green and other exotic colours. It's very slow but no Vista.
So I boot XP and a Message Box appears: "Could not install Vista ..."
The hardware could not be the problem
So please help!

how do i boot setup into safe mode?! :-)
When you boot your computer and the Vista boot manager appears with Windows Setup, press F8 on your keyboard. A list of boot options will appear, Safe Mode should be default selected, press enter and it should boot setup into safe mode. -- Andre Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "DHarray" wrote in message

that sounds like the new aura screen saver type display, youiprobably just di dnot wait long enough. there is very little informational display during install. frequent fade to black is not uncommon.

Oh yes, that part of setup is called the Out of Box Experience, there are some delays there especially when choosing your keyboard. -- Andre Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "mikeyhsd" wrote in message that sounds like the new aura screen saver type display, youiprobably just di dnot wait long enough. there is very little informational display during install. frequent fade to black is not uncommon.

While i waited with baited breath during the windows vista installation i found that it installed after about 40 mins.
P4 3.06Ghz 512meg ram
But, upon restart i get the "Aurora" background with the "please wait..." message and an animated hour glass turning every few mins.
I have yet to see the "true" oobe.
To this point i restarted the computer and booted to safemode and i am going to try this method and see if there is any improvement.
If there are any ideas regarding why i am getting a sticky screen please let me know.
from what i have read there is no other messages other then the "please wait..." which i think end users will find annoying (as i clearly have after an hour).
will post more comments when i actually get into the os. -- life is just... just get a clue...

I had to slave a pata drive to have vista beta x64 installed. It would not install on my sata drives. Everything completes. Then when its starts up, i get the build information on the bottom right on corner of the screen but everything is black. I dont have onboard graphics. Using a PCIe geforce 6800XT card on a M2N32 SLI Deluxe motherboard. With only having one IDE port it was a real faf on!! :-) But i can only guess its an imcompatibilty with the Graphics card. but ive checked and apparently it should be compatable as advsd from microsoft and Nvidia.
Any help on this black screen issue would be appreciated. thx
i tired installing Vista through XP and everything seemed to go well, but when the system restarted there was a blue screen that popped up right after the white bar started to scroll and siad the following.. "A Problem has been detected and windows has been shit down to preven damage to your computer. If this is the forst time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps! Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed Hard drives or Hard drive controllers. Check your Hard drive to make sure it is porperty configured & terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to hcekc for Hard drive corruption & then restart computer."

I've just finished downloading Vista but when i double click on file, it won't self-install. What's the next step then?
You must "Burn the .iso as an image" to a DVD or a virtual drive on your computer. Andre has some great advice about this and several other topics that you may be interested in reading. This is his blog page for installing Vista Beta:

If its a Beta OS YOU should at least make it so when you install it the previous OS goes into passive ro hibernation so its not gone, but its not activated and you are using Vista, if you chose to go back to your previous OS such as me with going back from Vista to Xp have a option that uninstalls Vista and reactivates Xp\2000 with out damaging your settings and such. Otherwise it should not be released to the public. I have fixed mine and gone back to Xp after 12 grueling hours of work. 1. Reformating, 2. reconfiguring via DOS, 3. installing Xp, 4. rebooting 21 times, 5. fixing failed instgalation, 6. reformating again, 7. reconfiguring via DOS, 8. reinstalling Xp, 9. deleting previous Xp instalation failure via boot.ini, 10. bypassing recovery drive security, 11. finding recovery files, 12. installing audio, ethernet, and other important apps, 13. installing other drivers from bypassed recovery drive, 14. installing my apps (MSN, Games, and such) PLEASE TAKE MY SUGGESTION OF THE PASSIVE OS IN CONSIDERATION

Did you even READ the warnings prior to installing Vista?
Sounds like you were not the right person to be a beta tester.

It already work like that, almost:
A: Get a new HDD for Vista B: Shrink the partition on your current HDD with gparted live cd for example. C: Get new hdd for Backup and use old for vista D: Get Mac with Parallels and switch between XP,Vista and OS X with ease..

There really is only one way to install Vista -- use a boot/partition manager, such as BING from www.terabyteunlimited.com, or one of the more expensive, GUIfied boot managers from Symantec or others.
Put Vista on a separate partition, keep XP on a separate (smaller partition) and create a USER partition to put your music/docts and such on. The boot/partition manager can grow/shrink/move partitions around and then manage how the partitions appear for each boot configuration (either XP or Vista).
Prior to getting my new computer, I could boot Win2K, XPPro, XPHE, XPPro SP2, etc each configured to use a separate DATA partition. With my new computer, I just have XP and Vista, with a USER data partition and the Dell diagnostics partition (boots w95). That's a total of four partitions.
Hide XP from Vista and hide Vista from XP. Then tweak the two OSes to find your user data on the USER partition.
With this approach, you can use either Vista or XP and your email, Word documents, music files, video files, etc. can be used on either system and if you decide to move forward with Vista, upgrade the Vista partition and erase the XP partition, or else erase the Vista partition and go back to XP until you, for example, buy a new system with Vista pre-installed.
Sounds to me like a whole lot of Vista beta testers need to learn how to use a good boot/partition manager. Want a tutorial?

It depends.
1) If you reformat the partition that XP is installed on and do a clean install, you will lose everything.
2) if you upgrade XP to Vista, successfully, you will have your data initially, but a lot of upgrades are not successfull, in that case you will probably lose everything. Vista Beta cannot be upgraded to the Release version, so on the off chance (very low probability) that you can keep it running until February, you will have to reformat the partition in order to install the release version of Windows Vista and you will lose everything.
3) if you have another partition, or if you can create another partition, you can dual boot and save your XP installation, while playing with the Vista Beta installation. You will still have to go through a fairly technical procedure even to do that.
Remember this is test software that has been released for testing. It is buggy and unreliable, and your drivers probably won't work with it. Microsoft is not giving you a free operating system to play with. They are giveing testers test software to test.
If you have things that you don't want to lose, make sure that you know exactly what you are doing before you proceed. Back everything up, and make an image so that if you can restore your XP operating system, applications, and data.
There is no way to uninstall, rollback, or restore to go from Vista to XP. You can reformat the partition that Vista is installed in and that's it.
To sum up, if you don't know exactly what you are doing you can lose everything. Many people who have posted here already have.
Good Luck
Todd

Would isn't the correct term, may is possible. On doing an upgrade to beta 2 I wasn't able to open any file on the resulting system without BSOD. As Colin has advised don't install if anything important is on the system. You won't be able to get back to Home, and there is no way to know what provisions they will make for upgrading the beta to RTM, but since that isn't the way it has been done in the past, I would doubt it. Usually you can keep on using the beta after the expiration (no guarantee, and is illegal at that time) but you will kick yourself not having the RTM version and Updates usually won't install or will make your system unstable. If you want to test it, I highly recommend that you add another drive, image your Home system over and upgrade the new image. You could do a clean install to that drive of Vista. You can copy your files over manually. If you decide to do the upgrade over your system, make sure you have a good drive image before you start. Its a beta. Don't risk anything you care about losing. Posting your email address isn't a good idea. Hope you have good anti-virus protection.

Yes, to the first question and very carefully to the last.
Use your dvd burning software's "burn image to disc" function. Do not perform any operations on the file except that. Burn at the lowest burn speed your software supports.
Do not install Vista on the only partition on your primary home computer. Just don't.

1) Don't upgrade your XP to any Vista Beta, and you'd be better off if you always clean installed believe me. But there is a market out there for people who want to save money and upgrade so MSFT will keep pushing it. I've never seen a softie upgrade Windows, on there own boxes except for testing purposes, and I don't expect I ever will. But trust me on this one. Protect that nice system you like. Don't upgrade. Todd's advise also figures into this strongly.
2) I recommend if you have another hard drive or pc to use it. If you don't you can ***dual boot*** and if you have to make another partition you can do this with Ranish for free. Then later when you have Vista on your box, you could use diskmgmt.msc in the run box Disk Management to further expand or shrink partitions.
Dual booting offers the advantage that on one box you have access to all your XP files and folders by typing C:\Documents and Settings\Dipen's XP Profile\Desktop in your run box, and dragging the folder icon off the top of the folder name bar to your desktop as a shortcut.
EVeryone recommends you back up your XP to media or image it first with software like Acronis, Ghost.
3) Whatever you would have on a Beta Windows before it times out that you want, you should copy to another drive or save on media. You're getting plenty of time until June 2007 to worry about that.
4) This is a link to Ranish partitioning software if you need to make a partition for Vista on that box:
Well recommended by veterans on the net: Ranish Partition Manager http://www.ranish.com/part/
Ranish Partition Manager is a powerful hard disk partitioning tool. It gives users high level of control for running multiple operating systems, such as Linux, Windows 98/XP, FreeDOS, and FreeBSD on a single disk.
Good luck,
CH

I am trying to install Vista Beta 2 on a Windows XP system. I keep getting the message "An error occurred while laying down Images" then it says "The upgrade was cancelled". I am using a disc purchased from Microsoft. It came in a 2 pack. One Disc says "Beta 2 x86 english" and the other says "Beta 2 x64 english". I used the x86 disc. Is this the correct one for my system? I have a Dell 2400 with Windows XP,Celeron 2.4 ghz. processor,768 mhz Ram and 40 gb Hard Drive. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Yes, that should work fine. Are you installing to a second hard drive (recommended, but not easy in a 2400) or did you create an empty partition on the existing hard drive (OK) or are you trying to upgrade XP (bad idea).
Hi When i boot from the vista dvd, it starts loading files.. but after a minute or so it stops and the screen is toned down.. How do i boot correctly? Hans M
